First Light is an ongoing collaborative effort that began in 2017 between Maine conservation organizations and Wabanaki Tribes to expand Wabanaki access and stewardship of land. Through gatherings, shared activities, education, and legal advocacy, First Light has successfully supported the legally binding access of sixty-two thousand acres of conserved land for Wabanaki use.
First Light’s long work is reciprocity: it seeks Wabanaki prosperity through access and stewardship of land, which in turn creates a stronger conservation movement that includes and reflects Indigenous expertise and perspective.
