Xine:wh-ding Inc. is an Indigenous women-led nonprofit based on the Hoopa Valley Reservation in Northern California. Led by Dr. Sara Merrick and a dedicated group of Hupa women and Elders, Xine:wh-ding offers a dynamic array of programming centered on connection to land and Hupa traditions. Meaning “a time and place for language,” Xine:wh-ding offers a language nest for babies and their families, summer immersion programming for children, social media lessons and education for community members, and training for new Hupa language teachers. As Xine:wh-ding leaders describe, “Our language is what connects us to the land and to each other.”
“We want to build out a viable alternative to the school system that’s completely dedicated to Hupa language and lifeways.”
At the Hupa Language Immersion Nest, the first babies in several generations are taught the Hupa language as a first language.
As a 2023 Luce Indigenous Knowledge fellow, Luce Merrick is creating an immersion school, or “nest,” to help grow the Hupa language among children.
